[Solved] No permission to access file
[Solved] No permission to access file
New computer, Windows 10, Open Office 4.1.6 I'm trying to retrieve the files from the old computer that died. On the new computer, when I try to open a file, I sometimes get a message "currently don't have permission to access this file". Again it seems random when I get this. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance for the help!

There is a thread at

which might be helpful.
If your files have come forward from an old computer, be sure you have the same User name (including the correct capitalisation, just in case that matters - it certainly does with passwords).

Re: no permission to access file
It shouldn't matter. Windows uses a unique Security ID (SID) to identify the user. The SID for the user on the new computer will not be the same as the SID for the user on the old computer even if the user names are the same on both computers. If the files have been copied to the user's Documents folder on the new computer, then those copies should have inherited permissions from the Documents folder and should be accessible to the user. The error message should appear only when trying to open files still on the hard drive from the old computer since those files will have permissions defined for the old SID but not for the new SID. To fix those permissions, it may be necessary to take ownership of the files on the old hard drive and add permissions for the new user.RoryOF wrote:If your files have come forward from an old computer, be sure you have the same User name (including the correct capitalisation, just in case that matters - it certainly does with passwords).

Re: no permission to access file
Thanks for the explanation, Bill. I'm ten years at least away from any detailed use of Windows, so am glad of the clarification.

Re: no permission to access file
Thank you for the advice. The problem is only random, so I haven't had the opportunity to see if I can resolve it! The old computer is dead, so I cannot go change anything there! I retrieved the old files via Carbonite! Have a good day!

Re: no permission to access file
Carbonite may have restored some of the files with explicit permissions instead of inherited permissions.
I found this in the Carbonite Knowledge Base:
All of my restored files are read-only or say access denied
It concerns files restored to a different system and basically says that the solution is to take ownership of the files and adjust the permissions.

Re: [Solved] No permission to access file
I just (Dec 2024) had a colleague with this problem. He wanted to update some .doc and .odt files using OpenOffice 4.1.15 but was faced with random failures to open certain files based on him (apparently and according to various Windows messages) not having the correct permissions. We did a pile of searching on the web and in the OpenOffice forums but none of the solutions seemed to work - his Windows 10 system was absolutely up to date in terms of fixes and so was his copy of OpenOffice.
As part of the problem determination process I asked him to email me one of the failing .doc documents as an attachment - on my WIn 10 system using Microsoft Office 365 I was able to open the file directly from the email in an instant without any messages appearing.
After pondering this for a while, and trying to think of any solutions, including looking at the permissions on the file on the original system (which looked perfect), I suddenly wondered if the problem could somehow be related to the folder containing the file. We looked at the original folder's permissions, but again these looked fine, and anyway we could open some files (or either type) without any problem on the original system.
Then I had the idea to copy the folder containing the files (some working and some not) on my colleagues system using copy and paste in File Manager and therefore giving the new folder the same name as the original but with the word 'copy' at the end of it, and lo and behold everything works perfectly from the copied folder. The problem still exists in the original folder, but not in the copied one! So copying the folder solves (or more accurately) bypasses the problem - we haven't tried deleting the original folder and renaming the copied version to the original folder's name, but I don't see why doing that would have any impact. Anyway for what its worth my colleague is happy with the solution and can continue using OpenOffice as he has done for many years.
