picked UTF-7 and UTF-8 and it all coms up as binary code. I have an Epson printer

Your file is a PDF. OpenOffice is not designed to open PDFs. Use a web search to locate an application which will open PDFs on your operating system. If you use MacOS (this information is missing from your forum signature) the application is called Preview and it is pre-installed on every Apple computer. PDFs are intended to be viewed or printed. It is not possible to edit a PDF with Writer.

I agree with MrProgrammer - your file is a PDF and should be opened with a PDF reader; if we knew your Operating System (Windows, Mac, linux etc) we might be able to indicate which PDF reader was installed on your computer.
