What Operating System (version) are you using? windows vista
What is your question or comment? Whwn I check for updates I get an error message 'Checking for an update failed.' Does this mean there are no new updates or that I have a problem with my installation?

The other cause could be that your Vista user account is not actually set up with the correct security permission, even if you're the computer's only user. Vista added some complications regarding assigning administrator rights... if you search the forum for Vista, you'll find several tips on how to verify and make sure the security setup works for your needs.

I wouldn't bother about having OOo check if there's an update. If you have registered and subscribed to the newsletter, you'll be informed about updates by e-mail. If you are a regular of OOo discussion forums, you have probably seen an update announced before you even receive that e-mail.

And OOo fires up a bit quicker if it doesn't do the auto-update check once per day.
