[Solved] Updating Open Office

Post by bazooka1 »

Welcome beginner. Please answer all of the questions below which may provide information necessary to answer your question.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Which version of OpenOffice.org are you using? 2.4.1
What Operating System (version) are you using? windows vista
What is your question or comment? Whwn I check for updates I get an error message 'Checking for an update failed.' Does this mean there are no new updates or that I have a problem with my installation?

A failed check for updates usually means there's a problem with the Internet connection. Are you sure you're connected before checking for updates?

The other cause could be that your Vista user account is not actually set up with the correct security permission, even if you're the computer's only user. Vista added some complications regarding assigning administrator rights... if you search the forum for Vista, you'll find several tips on how to verify and make sure the security setup works for your needs.
Cheers!

I wouldn't bother about having OOo check if there's an update. If you have registered and subscribed to the newsletter, you'll be informed about updates by e-mail. If you are a regular of OOo discussion forums, you have probably seen an update announced before you even receive that e-mail. ;)

And OOo fires up a bit quicker if it doesn't do the auto-update check once per day.

Very true! But the OP could signal a condition that might generate other problems as well, so I thought it might be good to try to resolve this one.

Many thanks for all the useful suggestions - these forums are really helpful.

I went into the internet tab and tried a couple of changes and now it works fine.

Thanks again.
