Can't open SXC files with Adobe Reader

Post by harding »

I'm at work and this is MS Xp prfessional, I can make spreadsheets in the open office 1.1.4 but when I go to open them Adobe reader tries to open them and I get a message that reads.
"Adobe reader can not open "filename.sxc" because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged (for example it was sent as an e-mail attachment and not correctly decoded)

So I changed my file to a .pdf and still no opening with Adobe. So I tried to open it with another program such as bgcommen.dll, but then I get another message telling me to re-install this program and it "might" work. Maybe I'm just too stupid to use this thing, I have spent nearly 5 hours trying to fix this issue because I use open office ALOT. the only way I can open a template it to go to "open template" in the Open Office toolbar, and chose from My documents what I want to open. Maybe that's the only way I can get it to work, I just thought there might be an easier way. GO figure....

Please chose a more explicit title for your thread next time. Users have to read your thread to know what it's about.

sxc and sxw are the former file format of OOo before branch 2. You should upgrade to OOo 2.3. It contains a native feature to export as PDF. Then, you'll be able to open them with Adobe Reader. Just changing the extension has no impact because the format is completely different.

Thanks to add '[Solved]' in your first post title (edit button) if your issue has been fixed.
LibreOffice 25.2 on Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE Faye) and 24.8 portable on Windows 11.

Hi,

All you have to do is tell windows to not associate the file extension with Adobe, but back to OpenOffice.org

From windows explorer
right click on one of the files and select 'Open With',
Select 'Choose Program'
in this dialog box you will see a check box for 'alwasys use the selected program to open with'. Check this
Now select OpenOffice.org or better SCalc to open the file.

That should do it for you.

Just to clarify the answers above are addressing your problems.

1. When you double click on an SXC file on your work computer it attempts to open in the Adobe Reader.
If so, Drew's answer is correct.

2. If you created a PDF from your SXC file using some tool other than OpenOffice.org (such as Adobe Acrobat because as Hagar said, the version of OO.o you are using does not have built in PDF export feature) then you probably need to look at the Adobe Acrobat software on your home computer to see why it is creating the PDFs incorrectly.

From my reading it does sound like you have a file extension association problem. Recommended steps (unless your computer at home is quite old and unable to run OO.o 2.3...)

Download and install the OO.o 2.3.
I believe this will fix your file assocation problems also. If not you can follow Drew's instructions.
Make sure you only create PDF exports of files you do not need to edit. Otherwise save your files to a format that can be used by both work and home computers.
Also, with OO.o 2.X the native file format is the OpenDocument format, it will work fine with sxw / sxc files too.

Let us know if our suggestions have helped. Thank you.
