[Solved] Font format & size included in pasted data?

Post by JamesEJ »

Hello again. Back in 2016 2016 I got some good advice (I saved in a document in my file cabinet folder) on how to maintain font format including size, to wit:

What you probably want to do is to set the Default font to a larger point size. Then anything you type will be that size, and anything you paste will if pasted unformatted (Edit > Paste Special > Unformatted ...) pick up and use the larger font.
1 Set the Default font to, say, 14 points. Start Writer > File > New > Text document. DO NOT TYPE ANYTHING - just go F11to open the Styles and Formatting pop-up window. Go to the Paragraph Styles tab. Right-click Default > Modify ... which opens the next window. Go to the Font tab and choose the font and size you want. Click OK.

2 You now need to save this as the Default template so it is always used when you create a new document. See [Tutorial] Creating a new default template which says:

1 From the File menu, choose Templates -> Save.
2 Give the template a name - perhaps BigFont
3 Select a category in the Categories list (for example, My Templates).
4 Click OK to save the template.
5 Choose File -> Templates -> Organize.
6 In the Categories list, double-click on the My Templates folder.
7 Right-click on BigFont and choose Set as Default Template from the menu.
8 Click the Close button.

Thought (not know for sure) this took care of words I pasted from other sources so I always have large 18 point font in documents (eg. online articles) but having just set this up again after a new win7 install, much to my surprise when I paste some words onto a document they keep the same online small font size. :(

Please enlighten me on how to be sure I can make all pasted words & letters the 18 point size & need to be able to easily read new documents.

Thanks again guys, Jim

Copy copies text with the text format. A simple Paste pastes what you copied. Use Edit > Paste Special > Unformatted text to paste the text without the format.

Uh not sure if I got the msg thru. The result I am trying to make happen is NOT to just copy the text with its existing format, NOT do a simple paste nor do an unformatted past. I do want the format to enable me to paste the 18 point size letters regardless of their original size from any source. Thanks for the try Bill. Jim

/Edit /Paste special : unformatted text will paste using the size and font at the current cursor position.

Yes, thanks for the reply. The question, put another way, is: Can I setup a format, so when I copy any size letters from anywhere and have them be 18 point size when I do paste them into an Oo document? Jim Ps. When I type the letters with my current Oo format, they are 18 point but not when I copy them from an online source with smaller than 18 point. More Clear now?

No, it's not clear now. Are you using Paste or Paste Special > Unformatted text? Paste will paste the text with the font size from the source. Past Special > Unformatted text will paste the text with the font size of the destination. There is no third option to paste with some other predetermined font size. That's how it worked in 2016 and that's how it works now.

Are you using Paste or Paste Special > Unformatted text? NO, never said I was.
Paste will paste the text with the font size from the source. You left out the format factor, which is the basis of my question.
Past Special > Unformatted text will paste the text with the font size of the destination. Not asking any Paste special question. But all ears if it solves the problem. be specific tho plz.
There is no third option to paste with some other predetermined font size. There is for typing (in 2016 too) called a format, so why not for pasting? I am doing it for typing now.
Do you know what formatting a text size does when employing the Oo Format?
If you are an expert on Oo formatting plz say so. Or if your not a formatting expert, again plz say so. Thanks Jim

here is the original 2016 format solution w/o the pasting bit:

Re: HOW SAVE FONT FORMAT SETTING SPECIFIC

What you probably want to do is to set the Default font to a larger point size. Then anything you type will be that size, and anything you paste will, if pasted unformatted (Edit > Paste Special > Unformatted ...) pick up and use the larger font.

5 Choose File -> Templates -> Organize.
6 In the Categories list, double-click on the My Templates folder.
7 Right-click on BigFont and choose Set as Default Template from the menu.
8 Click the Close button.

My post title is: Font format & size included in pasted data?

All above provided for posting clarity on the FORMAT based solution sought. Jim

bill is very conversant with Apache OpenOffice, so I would suspect his advice is good. His advice is the same advice I would give, and RoryOF has given; RoryOF works extensively with Writer, so his advice is good.

Perhaps you could humour us and try copying something which has a smaller font than your default size and use Paste Special > Unformatted text and tell us what happens.

All that is fine and dandy if you like but MY question remains the same which is based on the Oo "FORMAT" programming subject.

A subject that has escaped other posters attention, including yours.

Not here to humor anyone either. Need an answer to the format question I asked. If you do not know the answer just say I dunno and be done with it.

I want the automatic, no fuss no muss solution. Not a solution others prefer.

John-Ha (above) seemed tuned in on the format subject. See also: https://sccc.org.au/archives/2218 Jean knows about it too. Enough said Jim

If you're not using Paste or Paste Special > Unformatted text, then what are you using?
JamesEJ wrote:Paste will paste the text with the font size from the source. You left out the format factor, which is the basis of my question.
No, I didn't. Font size is part of the format.
JamesEJ wrote:Past Special > Unformatted text will paste the text with the font size of the destination. Not asking any Paste special question. But all ears if it solves the problem. be specific tho plz.
The second paragraph in your first post says to use Paste Special > Unformatted text. You are asking about Paste Special because using Paste Special > Unformatted text is the solution.
JamesEJ wrote:There is no third option to paste with some other predetermined font size. There is for typing (in 2016 too) called a format, so why not for pasting? I am doing it for typing now.
No, that isn't a third option. Text pasted using Paste Special > Unformatted text is formatted the same as typed text.

Ahh... "Font size is part of the format." Now you're getting red hot! if you know more about this subject, please continue on with that. That is part of the format question I seek an answer to. J

You answered the question in your first post. Just follow the instructions you posted there. I just repeated the part that you seem to have missed (use of Paste Special > Unformatted text).

If you want to learn about what attributes make up the format of different objects (Character, Paragraph, etc.), select Format > <object> to open the <object> dialog that shows the attributes of the <object>.

Ok, I see fully now. You are saying my desire "is impossible" in an Oo pasting scenario. Geeze, if so, then that would have been an answer I could live with. talking about a part of that subject does not tell me that subject matter. I will leave it at that, but to say that sole solution with extras actions seems quite odd indeed for a very good Oo system. Thanks for your efforts. Good nite, Jim

Based on all the messages above, I understand that you want to paste text from external source keeping the font of the source but setting its size to 18pt, which is the font size of the destination. Correct?
If so, it's not possible since both font and size are part of the format of the selection.
You've to do that in 2 steps: first paste and then select and apply the font size.

Note that no word processor can do what you ask for.

Please add '[Solved]' at beginning of your first post title (edit button) if your issue has been fixed.

SOLVED Re: Font format & size included in pasted data?

Post by JamesEJ »

Wow, a straightforward "you cannot do it" answer. That's cool.

So at the point of reading that just now, I copied this post title "Re: Font format & size included in pasted data?" and pasted it. On this online place, it certainly did not carry the bold to this page we are both on. I also pasted it onto a new Oo document page. There, the bold carried thru to that paste but also added a new feature, an underline. Strange indeed.

So OK-Fine, it cant be done with the Oo template format system and the next best thing is to edit and paste special. Then it comes out with extra bold and larger font.

But bottom line is that a person just has to live with it.

Marking solved, and thanks for your help.

The post title is a link which is typically underlined, but the underline doesn't become visible until the title text is selected. When you copy the selected title, the underline is also copied as part of the text format. The underline isn't being added willy-nilly by Writer.
