What are you doing when you try to open a document and what happens?
A quick solution might be to restart your computer.

You need to explain in detail what you are doing. Saying "I can't open a new document" is like saying my "car won't go". We need more information other wise we are just guessing.
Guessing ...
Does File > Open ..., open the files?
If so, search the forum with association as you have lost the association between AOO and .odt etc.
If this solves the problem, please view your first post in this thread and click the Edit button (top right in the post) and add [Solved] in front of the subject.

Sorry for the lack of info...I was in a bit of a panic, unable to open documents I really need. Even though I had just booted up when I couldn't open doc.'s, I tried your simple suggestion of a restart, FJCC, and that seems to have done the trick so Thank You to all for your suggestions and inquiry for more info. Nice to know I can come to this forum for help and get such quick replies even though I had to go away for the rest of the day. So Thanks again, I'm sure I'll be back and will give more complete info...
FYI...it was when I clicked or double clicked on file names, the doc.'s wouldn't open. The egg timer icon would show up for a few seconds, and then nothing.

That is probably because you had several copies of soffice.exe and/or soffice.bin running, probably as a result of saving a document and immediately attempting to restart Writer before it had completed its save operation. You need to close them using Taskmanager. Rebooting also closes them.
Search the forum with soffice.exe for more information.
