Recipients unable to open documents

I have 2.4 and since i downloaded OpenOffice, my mail recipients are unable to open up any of my files or pics from my documents. It's embarrassing and frustrating. please walk me through the solution in simple terms...help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you recipients are using Microsoft Office you have the save the files in .doc format. File--->Save As---->Microsoft Office 97/2000/XP.

Or send them a PDF. There's a PDF button right on the toolbar.

That way anyone can read them, whether they have MS Office, OOo or no office software at all.
