Slow opening odt files

It takes 20 or more seconds to open some very small documents from my desktop. I have OpenOffice 3.1.4 on a Windows 8.1 computer. Could this be related to the updated OpenOffice? Anyone else having this problem?

Any pictures, tables, sections, backgrounds in the files?

No. In fact, I deleted all content on the page. Still slow to load. I created a brand new document and did not enter anything in it, and it loads quickly. Sixe of file is only 12kb.

Try Ctrl A then Ctrl C in the old document, make a new document and paste the content into it. It may be some hidden corruption in the formatting of the old document.

I actually did copy and paste into a new document. It did load quickly, but the formatting is changed. It is a pretty simply 1 page form. Even if I remove all content on page, it loads slowly. So, I assume there is something in the file header or meta data causing problem? I did not see anything to clear all content (history, version control, etc.) I am not familiar with layout of a odt file, so this may not even apply...

Also, eventually, after opening these files a few times, OpenOffice stops launching and there are several instances in the task manager that I have to stop.
