Presuming that you are using the Draw application of Open Office, I'm surprised to find that, it appears that, there is no Eraser option.
The best I could come up with, is to highlight the section you don't want, then Cut it (Ctrl+x)
Edited to correct keyboard combination from Ctrl+C (which is copy, not cut) to Ctrl+x

Re: How can I access an eraser?
No, that definitely will not do. Here is the situation: Well, it looks like I can't cut and paste, so I'll just have to describe it. I have two concentric circles, okay? Let's go to the top of them. I have defined a space between the left circular arcs and the right circular arcs with vertical lines between the two arcs. I have drawn two rectangles with rounded corners one above the other and slightly fatter than the space thus defined between the two circles by the vertical lines. Chemical symbols go in each of the rectangles. All this is in place already. All I need to do is get rid of the two arcs of the circles that pass through the rectangles and the chemical symbols. The arcs of the circles between the vertical lines and the rectangles with rounded corners I will use as arrows, if I can just figure out how to add four arrowheads to the right ends of them. Tx.

Sorry, someone else with more experience with that area of Open Office might have a better idea.

Fix your Mac OS X version in your forum signature in User Control Panel → Profile → Edit Signature.davidlaing wrote:I have MAC OS-X 10.9.5.
See Help → Index → combining;draw objects and read about Modify → Shapes, especially Subtract.davidlaing wrote:How can I access an eraser? I want to erase some sectors of a circle
If you need additional assistance you'll get your problem solved faster if you attach your document demonstrating the situation (remove confidential information then use Post Reply, not Quick Reply, and don't attach a screen capture instead of the document itself).
If this solved your problem please go to your first post use the Edit button and add [Solved] to the start of the title. You can select the green checkmark icon at the same time.

I don't understand the following text: "Fix your Mac OS X version in your forum signature in User Control Panel → Profile → Edit Signature." I can't find anything of this sort on my computer. Where is the "User Control Panel?"

Re: How can I access an eraser?
OK, I've solved most of my problems with this. I'll upload the file. Remaining to do are the following:
1. Remove 8 short lines connecting large concentric circles to rectangles with rounded corners, either side of graphic. leaving only short lines in center between rectangles with rounded corners and concentric, flanking, arcuate segments.
2. Addition of 24 arrowheads to line segments (various orientations).
Tx.

Here's what I would have done for the bicarbonate on the left.davidlaing wrote:Remove 8 short lines connecting large concentric circles to rectangles with rounded corners, either side of graphic. leaving only short lines in center between rectangles with rounded corners and concentric, flanking, arcuate segments.
Add a single white rectangle to cover the lines you don't want.
You can position the rectangle accurately using the Format → Position and Size dialog (F4).
Format → Area → Area → Fill → White
Format → Line → Line → Style → Invisible
Modify → Arrange → Send Backward (as needed to put it underneath the rounded rectangle and adjoining lines)
Read about the latter operation in Help → Index → arranging;objects (guide), in this forum, or in the Wiki.
You seem to have figured out how to add arrows. I only added one.davidlaing wrote:Addition of 24 arrowheads to line segments (various orientations)

Re: How can I access an eraser?
The ellipse tool is available for making arcs with movable endpoints. It's not included in the default configuration, but it is easy to add.
Here's a little sample showing how to add it and some basic layout steps.
