"requires elevation" to open documents

Post by hidcrk »

I saved my word processing documents in the usual way but now I get the message: "requires elevation to open." I don't know what this means or how to resolve the issue. Can someone help?

Welcome to the forum.

If you google with openoffice requires elevation you get lots of hits. It seems to be a Windows file ownership problem. eg see The requested operation requires elevation.

If this solves the problem, please click the Edit button on your original post and add [Solved] in front of your subject.

See the Writer Guide, the Writer FAQ, the Writer Tutorials and Writer for students.

Remember: Always save your Writer files as .odt files. - see here for the many reasons why.

I don't think this is a Windows problem: happens with OO, doesn't happen with Microsoft office. Microsoft steps don't work.

Having the same problem.

Did all the windows "fixes", still get "requested operation requires elevation" when double clicking a saved document.

Found the solution. Somehow all my OO file associations got changed to unknown. Fixing this solved the problem. YMMV

Leeeson, all my .doc, .docx file associations are "unknown Application".

I can't figure out how to change them to OO. When I click "change program", Open Office c/app/files... shows as the default.
There is just no "Open Office" on the list, even when I search for other apps on this pc.

For .odt files, however, "Open Office" shows as the default.

Keep scrolling down and you will find an option that opens a search window in the "programs" directory. navigate to the "programs x86" directory and open office programs to find it.

Glad you got it solved. I just noticed the "c/app/files" in your post. Were the doc and docx files set to open with program installed in C:\app\files..." instead of C:\Program Files (x86)"? I'm wondering if that could have caused the problem. I don't have a C:\app folder, but another user recently posted a different problem with OpenOffice installed in C:\Apps instead of C:\Program Files (x86).

Hi leeelson,

When I clicked on the change program button to "associate a file type or protocol with a specific program", displayed as opening the document was:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\OpenOffice4\program\\swriter.exe" -o "%1"

That string as exactly as it appeared, including all the quotation marks and the lower case o at the end.

From there, I did as you told me, scrolled down, looked for other apps on this computer, located the x86 file and selected Open Office app from that.

Thank you again!
