Hi Everyone,
I installed Open Office.org on my Windows XP Pro SP2 machine the other day to try it out and could not get any of the modules to run. After a lot of uninstalling and re-installing of OO I eventually got all the modules except Writer to run by uninstalling the firewall.
What I would like to know is what files are used to start Writer so that when I re-install the firewall which is Comodo version 3, I can tell it to allow the files to run. When I started OO for the first time with the firewall reinstalled an running running I tried each OO module in turn and the firewall asked if certain files should be allowed to run. For example it would say that "soffice.exe was calling sdraw.exe" when starting Draw for the first time and asked if the files should be allowed to run but when I clicked on Writer I got an immediate "Access is denied"and no query about files. Presumably soffice.exe calls swriter.exe or does it?
I would be interested to know if anyone else uses Comodo firewall version 3 and is having trouble getting Writer to run and if they have solved the problem
Getting Writer to run
Re: Getting Writer to run
I never use Windows (except for a professionally administered system at work), but from what I can read in various postings here and in http://download.openoffice.org/common/instructions.html you should:
- Download
- Check the downloaded file by means of md5sum
- go offline
- turn off virus scanners
- call the setup.exe
The installation process places a group of links in the applications menu.

Please, edit this topic's initial post and add "[Solved]" to the subject line if your problem has been solved.

Perhaps a Comodo configuration files regarding swriter.exe has been kept somewhere. Can you edit the Comodo rules and check if swriter.exe has been forbidden?
For information, there is a Comodo forum moderator, perhaps you should try his forum also: What Security Software do you use?

LibreOffice 25.2 on Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE 7 Gigi) and 24.8 portable on Windows 11.
Re: Getting Writer to run
Hi Villeroy, I had done what you said and then re booted so that all the things that had been inactivated were re-activated (firewall, antivirus and antimalware programs) and all the modules of OOo run apart from Writer. Writer only runs if I uninstall the firewall which is Comodo version 3. Initially, none of the OOo modules would run and I don't know what happened to make them run now.
I have downloaded and installed Ubuntu and intend to use it instead of Windows when I can use it with a bit more confidence than I have with it at the moment. OOo runs perfectly on that!
Hi Hagar I haven't got Comodo installed at the moment but will install it later and could let you know what happens if you think it may be useful to other people.
Regards
Chris
