Thank you. How simple! I'm new to this word processor. It looks impressive.

You will find it useful to start correctly with your use of OpenOffice; it is unlike many other word processors in that it relies heavily on Styles. There is an introduction to them at http://openoffice.blogs.com/openoffice/ ... style.html

I just exported a document as PDF, then tried to retrieve it. Clicking on the file name brings up ASCII Filter Options. Why can't I get the actual PDF document?

OpenOffice is not designed to open PDF files. These should be opened with a dedicated PDF reader, usually, but not exclusively, Adobe Reader. If that is on your computer or you know the default program for PDF files on a Mac, start it, then use it to open your PDF file. You may later need to set it as the default program for opening PDF files.
Edit: I don't know what is the default program from PDF files on a Mac. Perhaps it is Finder?

As a new user, can I suggest you have a look at the Writer Manual.

The context related Help is also very good - click the Help button in any open pop-up window.

If you want to edit (change the contents of) PDF files the only really sensible thing is (the expensive) Adobe Acrobat. There is an add-on which opens PDF files in Draw, but it is very clumsy to use for anything but very simple changes.

Remember: Always save your Writer files as .odt files. - see here for the many reasons why.
