End quotes breaking to the next line
End quotes breaking to the next line
Hello, I hope someone can help me with this problem. I did try searching but was unable to find my specific problem - I apologise if the answer is out there and I have just missed it.
Ending quotation marks typed directly after the last word in a sentence are breaking down to the next line, becoming separated from the word/punctuation combo they immediately follow. There are no spaces inserted between the quote mark and the character that immediately precedes it. For example, "this line is near the margin," gets separated into "this line is near the margin, on one line and the " on the next.
I've never had this problem before. Don't quote marks have their own zero width non breaking space built in (so to speak), so they stayed glued to the character that immediately precedes them (when there aren't any user-typed spaces in between)? This is in Open Office 4.0.1 on Win 7 Pro. Hyphenation is turned off. In Autocorrect localized options, quotation marks are set to replace (default).
What am I missing here? I would love for it not to do that.
Thanks.

Re: End quotes breaking to the next line
Are these quotation marks you have typed or pasted entire including the quotation marks from the Internet?

Re: End quotes breaking to the next line
Sorry ... not quite sure what you are asking?
In Open Office on my computer system, this is occurring with text I am manually typing into the program. It does not happen to text I have copied from elsewhere and pasted into the same Open Office document in which I have the problem with my manually-entered text. Here, in my post, the example was simply typed into the post (not pasted from anywhere), to demonstrate what was going on.
Thanks.

Re: End quotes breaking to the next line
OK, that localises the problem to your computer and your input. Perhaps the substitution process, which changes from straight quotes to curly quotes, has a space before the replace character. Please check /Insert /Autocorrect /Autocorrect options : Localised Options tab and verify that the single start/end quote replacements use U+2018 and U+2019, and the double quotes use U+201C and U+201D.

Can you upload an example .odt file with the problem.

Re: End quotes breaking to the next line
One question I forgot to ask. What language and variant is being used? The language for the current cursor location will be shown at the bottom of the OO screen.
Apache OpenOffice 4.1.15 on Xubuntu 22.04.5 LTS
Re: End quotes breaking to the next line
The language is English (Canada). I am playing around with it, and it looks like you are right that there seems be something awry with the substitution process.
I tried it, and yes, it works when I use the 201C / 201D curly quotes; however, I do not want curly quotes. I was using an angled version of a straight quote -- specifically, the U+2033 double quote from the character map that comes up when designating the replacement quote (in the Localised Options tab) ... however when I noticed the problem I changed that by selecting 'default' instead (leaving the 'replace' box checked). The problem persisted though, even with default selected instead of using a unicode replacement. I just tried selecting another angled one - U+02BA from the character map - and the problem occurs with that one as well.
It appears the only time it goes away and the quotation mark stays glued to the word it follows is when I use the curly quotes (yuck), or turn substitution off entirely by unchecking the 'replace' box. So, ?? the only quotation mark I can use, and not have this problem, is a non-replaced straight one (unless I want to go to the trouble of placing a zero width no break space before every end quotation mark)?
Is this how it is supposed to work, or is there something messed up?
Thank you for pointing me toward the source of the problem.

Re: End quotes breaking to the next line
I'm going offline now, so can't follow this up immediately. A possible cure might be to investigate the coding of the extension to insert a slight space before :;!? characters in French text (similar also used in older English typesetting) - as extensions repository is currently down (possibly no fix until tomorrow, Monday) I can't give you a pointer to the exact name/location - and adjust it to do what you wish.
Most of my extended texts are targetted for printing, so I use curly quotes as standard.

Re: End quotes breaking to the next line
Thanks very much, Rory. If you have time at some point and can help me find a solution, that'd be great. For now I'll just turn replacement off and live with the vertical straight quotes.
And thank you as well, John, for your interest.

Re: End quotes breaking to the next line
A somewhat desperate approach that might work would be to insert a no-width no-break
Insert > Formatting Mark >no-width no-break Not useful for a lot of text but for odd occasions ...

My AutoCorrect options are as below and replace straight quotes by curly quotes without your problem. A thought - have you also got quotes replaced by quotes in the replacements listed under the Replace tab? If so, you would then have an interesting conflict taking place.
NB - the context related Help on pop-up windows is good.
Oops - I have the same problem when I use slanted quotes U+2033 so it looks like an issue of some sort.

Re: End quotes breaking to the next line
There's no user-accessible way (that I know of) to modify Writer's set of line-breaking characters.
Have you considered using the standard quotation mark characters but in a font that has the appearance you want? Then you have standard text so the lines break properly, and just the appearance you want.

Re: End quotes breaking to the next line
A workaround would be to reduce the space between characters on the line from which the " were spilled - use Format > Character > Position > Scale width ... and set to 99%. This should shorten the line enough to bring the " back and is virtually unnoticeable.
If there was a way, in Find and Replace with Regular expressions, to 'find " at the start of a line shown on the screen', then a simple macro could apply the shrinking to the previous line.

Re: End quotes breaking to the next line
I looked at the code for extension "espace insecable"; this seems to replace the keyhandler with its own code which identifies the incoming character. If that is one of the specified characters it replaces the character with a sequence of a nonbreaking space and the character.
It should be simple enough to adapt this code to the case in point in this thread, but to be honest, it will be easier to hand adjust the few lines where this problem arises, perhaps by adjusting the character tracking by a miniscule amount. Any document of importance needs to be proofread and there will almost certainly be adjustments needed for some matters - for example, hyphenated words at the end of a page. The few unwanted breaks in front of angled quotes can easily be adjusted at that proofreading stage.

Re: End quotes breaking to the next line
Thank you, everyone - this is all greatly appreciated. It's reassuring (but, not a good thing) to hear the problem can be reproduced and it's not just me being weird.
I am familiar with kerning and tracking, having worked with page layout software in the past. I think if Open Office had individual character kerning that might work for me, but alas. Unfortunately, my document will be used on electronic devices, some of which will auto re-wrap to fit the screen, so a tracking adjustment may not help. I will experiment with using the standard quotation marks but changing the font - maybe I can change just the font of the quotation marks and still have them stick like glue to a different font character. If not, I'll either just give up and use the standard straight quotes or maybe try to automate the insertion of a zero width no break space.
Thanks again.
