[Solved] How do I enable Japanese support in OpenOffice 4?

Hello,

It's actually been a while since I upgraded to a new version of OpenOffice, and I haven't even had time to write anything for a while. But I do remember (in 3.0?) there was either a seperate installer download to add Japanese, or there was a version with Japanese support included.

However, I did not see any such download on the "Downloads" page or extension on the "Extensions" page. Has the process for using Japanese in the default (English) OpenOffice changed? When I was customizing the default fonts, all options for Asian fonts were greyed out. (I can input and view Japanese in other software, so I know Microsoft IME is configured correctly.)

Thanks a bunch,
Terry

Please, no replies about a Japanese version of OpenOffice...I'm not talking about the user interface, I'm talking about typing Japanese with Microsoft IME.
(If you haven't the slightest idea what I'm talking about, please do not downgrade this post by posting...that prevents it from showing up as an unanswered post!)

TerryS may also hacve overlooked the right-hand button on the download page, which is labelled "Download language pack". One can select the Japanese language in the centre dropdown and by pushing that button get the language pack. When installed this should make available Japanese dictionaries - one does not have to select Japanese as the User interface.

That wasn't what I was looking for, but I solved the problem mentioned in that post, too (where Hiragana input method has to be selected every time):
  1. Right-click the input button (when you hover it says, "Right-click to open IME options").
  2. Select "Properties > Advanced > Mixed Japanese/English"
  3. Uncheck "Automatically convert target string to Alphanumeric"

:super: You are quite right, Rory. The only problem with that pack is the installer is all in Japanese. (It assumes only natives want to use Japanese!) I'm not up on many Japanese computer terms yet (I'm a beginner/hobbyist, really). However, I got through it okay, thanks to the consistency of installers these days; most of the "Next" and "Back" buttons had corresponding arrows. The "Finish" button had an "F" on it.

After running the installer, I was able to make the changes to global settings! The only thing that's a little confusing with OO 4 is to enable "East Asian" you have to click something about the "UI" (User Interface), otherwise the option to select a Japanese language for mixed documents is disabled. (It did not actually make any changes to the UI, thank God.) I confirmed by pressing "F11" to access default styles, and clicking the "Font" tab, could see the Japanese font selection. (I opened a document already formatted with my default template.)

Thank you very much!

I replied specifically to address that problem and now you are telling me that you didn't want help with that? You lost me.
