Spell Checker for openofice 4.1.1 running on windows 8.1

The english spell checker runs fine on openffice 4.0.1 but when I upgraded to openoffice 4.1.1 and I do a spell check and click on change openoffice goes into a no response mode and hangs, have to kill it with task manager. This is running on a new HP windows 8.1 system.

Start TaskManager (Ctrl Shift Esc) and kill any soffice processes shown on TM's Processes tab. Exit TM and delete or rename the OpenOffice User Profile, details in

Not solved. I renamed the USER profile and it crated a new one, but it still does not work.

Not solved. I went through the [Troubleshooting] Spell check in OpenOffice, and everything checked out in each step.

The locality of the English spellchecker selected must match the exact version of English being typed and selected in /Tools /Languages /For all text. For example, en-US typing will not be checked if en-GB is selected as dictionary.

"Not responding" is not one of the usual symptoms for a problem with SpellCheck. Since resetting your user profile didn't help, you may have a corrupt installation. Did you check the integrity of the file downloaded to install AOO before installing? If the file is OK, then try running the installation again and select the "Repair" option.

Not solved. I ran the repair and it all checked out.

Apparently this problem only happens with SPREADSHEETS.

Select the cells and hit Ctrl+M. Does it help?
Have you checked the language for those cells?

Not solved. Ctrl+m did not help. How do check the language for a cell?

Right click the cell and Format cell, then Font.
You can also check the style: open the Stylist (F11), then right click Default (Cell styles) and Modify, then Font tab.

Not solved. Cells are set to English(USA) like the rest of OpenOffice.

Is the file complex?

Not solved. Yes it is saved as .ods. No it is not complex it only contains text.

Just tried and it works fine. I did a Change and a Change all in your document and no problem.

There seem to be really a problem with your installation.
You should uninstall AOO, clean the system with something like RevoUninstaller or a registry cleaner and then reinstall.

The sample file opens correctly for me using OO 4.1.1 on Xubuntu 14.10. The few words highlighted as misspellings are proper names. Text is set to en-US; my system dictionary is for en-UK. I agree with Hagar that you should reinstall after removal with RevoUninstaller (use this at its most aggressive). Reinstall from a fresh download only from
http://www.openoffice.org/download
which will redirect you to SourceForge servers where the files are stored. Your download will begin in about five seconds, with no need to click on anything else.

Check the MD5Sum of the downloaded file to verify that there is no corruption. See

Not solved. I did all you suggest still does not work. I am through fighting it. I will do my spreadsheets on my Windows 7 machine.
