I have been encouraging a colleague to install OpenOffice on all the machines in his Internet Cafe. He has three machines with Microsoft Office 2003 installed, with all printing to the one network printer. The printer itself is a Canon LBP 3300 with a server card installed.
Using Microsoft Office, the printer will accept any size page and adjust itself to A4 paper, but with OpenOffice it sends back an error if the right paper has not been loaded. People wanting to print must change their paper size to A4 manually for every print job, else required to load the correct size paper in the manual feed tray.
When people are in a hurry this is a very big issue, since 4-5 people queued up to print getting error messages and having to reset the printer at the far end of the premises creates chaos.
What can be done about it? I am a great supporter of OpenOffice and recommending it to everyone I meet, but this sort of problem turns them off and they go back to using the more familiar Microsoft product.
Any help would be great,
Gil
