Can I open Microsoft Word 2007 documents in OpenOffice?

Welcome beginner. Please answer all of the questions below which may provide information necessary to answer your question.

I just had a trial version of microsoft office 2007 and uninstalled it and installed open office. I was under the assumption that you can open word documents in open office but it wont let me is this possible at all?

It is possible to open Word documents in OpenOffice, but not Word 2007 (docx) documents. To do that one has to install an extension. A search for "docx" or "Word 2007" should find several previous threads on this.
