[Solved] Budget in spreadsheet
[Solved] Budget in spreadsheet
Beginner……..don’t know what to do.
Howdy You’ll,
Was looking at budget planning stuff online and this popped up: http://www.mymoneycoach.ca/my_budget/bu ... sheet.html
But I don’t know what to do. I would like to have the calculator-spreadsheet but not sure which to download or what will happen when I do.
I don’t have Microsoft Office Excel. I have a Microsoft Office Excel reader but it only reads………..can’t edit.
There’s a big green download button with three options under it.
Which should I choose?
What will happen when I choose it?
I don’t want my computer to explode and I don’t want Dick Cheney to hack into my computer and steal all my money…………not that he would get much.

Re: Beginner……..don’t know what to do.
An Excel spreadsheet may or may not work on OpenOffice (not = if it contains macros, as OO macro language differs from that of Excel). You should download OpenOffice only from
http://www.openoffice.org/download
which will redirect to SourceForge servers where the files are stored.
A number of OpenOffice specific budget templates are at
http://templates.openoffice.org/en/sear ... _order=ASC
There have been no (I hope!) recorded instances of OO making computers explode. Don't worry about Dick Cheney stealing your money - the Government, wherever you live, will do that as a matter of course!

One of the options is "Download Open Office Spreadsheet (.ods) file". Choose that one.

Thanks RoryOF,
This one right?

Long thing isn't it.
I’m in Texas but you have to watch out for Dick Cheney wherever you are. I try to charge everything to George W. Bush because he can’t read and just sends all his bills to dad. Dad has an oil deal with the Saudi princes so they pay all his bills. Can’t charge to Dick C. or Obama because they both can read and you’ll get caught.

I know nothing of the mr-download site you reference but it is not uncommon for objectionable add-ons to be supplied by other sites. We know that the OpenOffice site above does not have any add-ons on the standard OO download.

Re: Beginner……..don’t know what to do.
My recommendation regarding mr-download.com is STAY AWAY.
I've probably come across a few hundred (possibly into the thousands) of viruses, trojans, malware, adware, etc. on other people's computers that have come from that site.

Re: Beginner……..don’t know what to do.
Sorry…………still dumb.
Download Apache OpenOffice
(Hosted by Sourceforge.net - A trusted website)
Select your favorite operating system, language and version:
It says Windows (EXE) and Download Language Pack.
My OS is Windows 7, so is Windows (EXE) OK for this?
Not sure what Language Pack is. Because I speak seven languages, I have a thing called Proofing tools (http://office.microsoft.com/en-001/lang ... 28851.aspx) installed and I’m guessing its equivalent to that. Is this correct? If so, I’d like to have it.
Is it recommended that I just download all as is, or select them individually?

Where did that link come from? The link in your first post opens a page with a link to the official OpenOffice.org download page.jmdraft wrote:This one right?

My Web of Trust browser add on flags Mr-downlaod as having a poor reputation. Best to avoid it and only download AOO here http://www.openoffice.org/download/.

Sorry, I don’t know how I got that link but I’ll stay away from it. It probably has Dick Cheney hiding in it.

Re: Beginner……..don’t know what to do.
No, AOO is available in many languages. Let's use me as an example. I use an English language interface but for various reasons may want a french language interface -- perhaps I am trying to help a Franophone collegue with a problem . A French language pack allows me to switch all my menu items, help, etc, to to French. A language pack has nothing to do with spell or grammer checking or general proofing.jmdraft wrote:

Re: Spreadsheet for budget
Thanks jrkrideau
OK, it sounds like something that would be very useful to me.
Sorry to be such a dummy about all this but then, I guess you folks are there. I’m just very cautious about downloading anything because, far to often, all sorts of crap manages to sneak in, no matter how careful I am about declining etc. And then, all sorts of problems start happening and I end up having to do security scans and system restores etc.
So back to the second part of this question:

Re: Spreadsheet for budget
The Download Full Installation will give you the English version of OO 4.1.1 for Windows.
This is the recommended download. You only need the Language pack if you want to use OO with a language other than English or if you want the English language and have downloaded a version that came with another language.
If you want to download the Full Installation for a language other than English, then change the 2nd dropdown box to match the language you want, then use the Download Full Installation link located on http://www.openoffice.org/download/index.html

Re: Spreadsheet for budget
Thanks RusselB,
I’ll try it. Even though I’m basically dumb, I speak, and often use, seven languages to email/chat with friends (in their native languages) in various countries (where I've worked/lived) all over the planet, so I think the language thing (if it doesn't take too much space on drive and add other stuff that I don’t want) looks like it might be useful.
Here goes and I hope it doesn't explode my computer or cause a flat tire on my car.

[Full Installation for a language other than English,
Nope! Still confused.
I started to download and then read more carefully.
I want English (my native language) AND, I also want the other languages. Is this not possible? Or, if possible, what would be the procedure?
Also, I want to reply. Specifically to RusselB’s post. How do I do this?
