aloha,

I have already saved a document and its "titled" and in "my documents". Now, when I open that file and add to it and try to simply save it, using control/s....the "save as" window opens and want me to name the document. I thought "save as" was contol/shift/s

what am I doing wwrong?

I guess you stored a template, which always creates a brand new copy of itself so the template remains untouched when you store the modified document as such.
Usually templates are stored in a distinct directory but they can be stored anywhere. Office templates for text use to have the file name suffix .ott, contrary to as-is-documents which use to have a .odt suffix.

I have already solved the problem....the document was a word perfect document, which I no longer have. I opened it and added to it but when I saved, it had never been changed over to OO. Now that its changed to OO, control S works normal.

Every document on my computer is a WP document.

For new users like me who had used a different word prosesser and now use OO, every WP document will need to be converted the 1st time you add material. You will have to "re" save as....each WP document, one at a time, unless there is a way to search all WP documents and convert them all at once.
