Hello there, I've been using OpenOffice.org for about a week now at my new workplace, and I ran into two problems that I would like to ask about. I'm running a Windows XP SP2 on an IBM Thinkpad X31 laptop, and the problems occur both in OOo versions 2.4.0 and 2.4.1.
The first problem is that I'm using the middle mouse button of my thinkpad to scroll in virtually anything from any word processing application to Firefox. Because of this I was troubled to see that this feature does not work for me in any OOo software even though it does work on every other PC at work (they have regular mice with normal scroll buttons). Is there any way I can make scrolling work with the middle mouse button of my Thinkpad in OOo?
The second problem is something more obscure, but it seems that every time Writer is open, regardless of whether it is the active application or not, there is a general freeze on my machine every other minute, for five to ten seconds. Mostly when I change tasks from something else to Writer, or from Writer to something else, there is a lag that restricts me from clicking, typing and sometimes even moving my mouse cursor. This never occurs with other programs, just since I've installed and have been using OOo. Is this a bug, a problem with my system or something else? I am sorry if a solution for this has already been posted, but I did not find a relevant search phrase that would lead me to such a topic.
Thank you in advance for your help.

Re: Thinkpad mouse scrolling & lag problems with OOo 2.4
I think the second problem has to do something with your system, maybe you keep open many applications at the same time and your system has not enough RAM for that.

Re: Thinkpad mouse scrolling & lag problems with OOo 2.4
littlegeniuz, the problem occurs even when I only have OOo open. The system has 1.25 gigabytes of RAM which is plenty for everything else. As I've said, the problem is clearly OOo-related as it only occurs when OOo is open.

Concerning your first problem: Did you try to download the latest driver for the mouse?
The second problem is indeed weird. We discussed a similar behavior here, however it was linked to Copy & Paste.
What state is the system in when this happens? You can check the state (i.e. CPU and Memory consumption) using the task manager. Or use Windows Sysinternals Process Explorer for a more in-depth analysis.
Do you have all current windows patches (except SP3 which I do not have either) applied? Also, you could try to update the display driver (and other system drivers) via the Thinkpad System Update.
Kind regards,
phil
