Using a smart key to type special characters

Welcome beginner. Please answer all of the questions below which may provide information necessary to answer your question.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Which version of OpenOffice.org are you using? 2.2.1
What Operating System (version) are you using?Windows XP
What is your question or comment? I am using a standard Engllish keyboard, but I often need to type in German, using umlauts, which are stored in the "special characters" location. I would like to be able to set up smart keys, so that, for instance, in order to type the Umlaut version of "U" I would type "SHIFT-U" (character # 220). It would save me ++ time if I could do so, rather than going thru the cumbersome process of the individual steps. In order to do so, I would need a Macro which is activated by the smart key. I cannot figure out how to do so. Is it possible, and if so, then how?
Thank you very much for your time.
