I am using 4.0.0 on Window 7 . locking docs instructions do not match what comes up on my screen.
I work with legal docs and Need to know how to lock and unlock in the word processing program (writer I think). tho unlocking does not seem to be a problem (lol dont know if i am ending up with duplicate files tho). thebestrealestateguy@yahoo.com. I am puter challenged so dont go all techie on me. don't use jargon. if you say to do something provide the step by step instructions and do not abbreviate. Assume this is the first day I ever saw a computer.

Re: How to lock and unlock document in writer
Save as PDF. There is an icon for this near the printer icon or menu:File>Export>PDF. This is the preferred method when you send a document to some receipient which is not supposed to modify anything. It is an electronic print out which is readable on any computer system. Like a paper print, this file is not editable anymore. menu:File>Send>Email as PDF attaches the current document as PDF to a new email.
If you want to prevent accidental modifications without locking the document permanently, push the edit button left of the PDF button.

Re: How to lock and unlock document in writer
I know that documentS can be locked and unlocked in WRITER. After finishing doc sometimes I have somehow inadvertently lock some of my docs but that is ok cuz i can open read only or edit doc. I just need to know how to lock a WRITER doc on purpose when it is in it final form (that is a doc that gets sent to court) but I want to be be to save the locked doc in WRITER becuz i use docs already written as templates. Please do not answer with anything other than doing it in writer. I know it can be done cuz like I said I have accidently locked docs. I now want to do it on purpose. IF it is not clear, i want to lock a WRITER doc in WRITER NOT PDF.
If this "answer": """

I specifically said to treat me as if i just got my computer today. IN OTHER WORDS I CANNOT FINE THE NE KEY.

The "Edit" button is on the standard toolbar, just below the menu line. The first four icons on the toolbar mark buttons for general document handling (create, open, save, email) and the fifth is "Edit".
Note that the Edit button is not available until there is a copy of the document on disk. If you create a new document, the button is disabled (dimmed) until you save your file.
Note also:
You can integrate your template files even better into Writer by using the menu entries in "File - Templates".

Note also:
- The protection you get from the edit button is useful to prevent accidental changes.
However, anyone can disable the protection by clicking the edit button, and edit the content again. - This does not protect accidental deletion or overwriting of the file.
For protection on that level, you have to set the file as write protected:- In a file list (like the open/save dialog, or preferrably in Windows Explorer/My computer) you right click on the file entry and select Properties.
- Tick the entry that says "Write protection", "Readonly" or something to that effect.
(My computer's installed Windows OS is in Norwegian, so I don't know the exact wording in English.) - Click OK
- Use menu selection "File - Save as"
- In the "File type" field, select ODF Text Document Template
You can integrate your template files even better into Writer by using the menu entries in "File - Templates".

In the Save as dialog, there is an option bottom left to save with password. Click the More options and check "Open file read only" then type a password for to allow editing only.
Do not enter the password to open, it would encrypt the file.
Please add [Solved] at the beginning of the title in your first post (top of the topic) with the edit button if your issue has been fixed.
