[Solved] New v4.0.1 says broken, move to trash when opened

Solved! This is the hardest to use site on earth... Took me HOURS to get here had to open all new account.. seems if you don't know Uname & PW you can't get them. so I had to open a new email!

OK i deleted my old version, tired 4 times to down load new version of Apache OO and i get the same message.trying to open the program, "Broken, move to trash". I took ill today spending 3 hours in the ER, & trying so hard to get ANY version back.
I tried ver 3.something, & got the same message. I am in deep trouble with out this.. I use Mac OS 10.7.5
This hours & hours of trying makes me never want to try a new version again I'm so upset.
Can anyone help me? All SO difficult...
I have NO version on the computer anymore, I do have the download of the older version still but again, it will not open.

For the benefit of others reading this post, the actual message would be: “OpenOffice.app” is damaged and can’t be opened. You should move it to the Trash. The message means that Open Office has been flagged as unknown software by the Apple's OS X GateKeeper. This sitution is discussed in the Open Office release notes, which also have a link to information from Apple about GateKeeper which explains how to bypass GateKeeper's message:

Always read the release notes from the developers when installing any new software. This will save you lots of time and frustration.

As long as you haven't emptied the Mac's Trash you can simply restore the older application in Finder by opening the Trash, selecting OpenOffice.org.app, and using File > Put Back. If you're not familiar with basic Mac procedures like this you should go to your local library and borrow one of the many "Introduction to Mac"-type books. This will save you lots of time and frustration.

The current version is 4.0.1; 4.1 hasn't been released yet.

Be careful to keep track of all the ID/password combinations that you have created for websites. This will save you lots of time and frustration. Even without an ID/password for this site, you could have found the solution by performing a search of the forum. Others have had the same difficulty, created topics, and received the same solution that I'm providing you. Next time, search before posting.

Hi Mr Programmer,
Thank you very much for writing, I kind of understand, but pretty technical sounding.. I would have no way of knowing there has to be a special way of wording this title. Again, this site I find very unfriendly for someone who has never been able to grasp all the things you need to know to make it work right. I imagine it must be 2nd nature to a person like yourself. To me it's like ya have to have some kind of special knowledge to use it. I have a high degree of worsening neurological issues including the loss of ability to type properly... So please excuse my not doing things right, though I appreciate you pointing this stuff out. I have a large amount of typos and reread what I type and correct what I see wrong. I do not catch it all.
SO I emptied trash and have NO version but the 3.someting download (Not working) I guess I should move this to trash as well, then and go back to the 4.0.1, which will not open. I am in serious trouble now. I don't understand half of what you wrote, but I'll try. you don't happen to know what the fix is then? I do very poorly with anykind of searches. I can't figure out what I'm looking at. I wish I had never tried the update... /

I'm pretty Mac/tech savvy, and I would agree that Neither AOO's nor Apple's info on Gatekeeper is particularly helpful in this instance. If there are clear instructions on how to solve the "app is damaged" message, I'm not finding it.

So, since I hadn't upgraded I decided to do so and figure out the steps. I never encountered the "OpenOffice is damaged" notice, but this is how I got it to run:

-download OpenOffice from openoffice.org
-Find the dmg file that downloaded. The name should begin with "Apache_OpenOffice"
-Double click on the file to open it
-Drag the OpenOffice icon to the folder "Applications" (Both can be found in the window that opened when you double clicked on the file)
-Navigate to the Applications folder on your Mac (You can just double click the Applications folder in the open window)
-Control-click or Right-click (or two-finger click) on OpenOffice, and choose "Open"
-You will get a warning that the application is by an unidentified developer, click the button that says "open"

OpenOffice should open. From now on you can open it normally.

Note: These instructions are in the Apple article MrProgrammer linked to, but it was not clear that it would help if the "app is damaged" warning appeared. Since I didn't get that warning, I can't be certain that it will work, but it's worth a try.
