Missing formula box entirely

I recently changed to OpenOffice 3.4.1. I am used to using equation editor and have used LaTek . I was very please with the original ease of access and using equation editor.
But now I cannot get a formula (dialogue) box to appear. Have I toggled some switch? I go to <insert>, to <object> and get a greyed out rectangle. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
