Open Office 4.0

I just started using Open Office. I inserted a field (insert -> Fields -> other ->cross-references -> set reference) and am trying to delete it with edit -> Fields. I have the fields highlighted (view -> Field Shadings). But, the edit -> Fields is shaded and not accessible. What now coach?

The Open Office 4.0 (insert -> Fields -> other ->cross-references -> set reference) does not correspond to the Open Office 3.x documentation (page 394 in the Free e-Book Edition). I did try to find a Open Office 4.0 document but no luck. And I did search the forum for "fields", no luck. Sorry to have to ask a newbie question. Sigh.

(By the way, an absolutely GREAT product).

Select the whole field, then Edit > Cut followed by Edit > Paste Special > Unformatted text.

Bug 35292 - can't delete cross reference

Appear to work. However, the text is part of a list. The edit > cut drags the text and the list number. The edit > Paste Special > unformatted text pastes the text and the list number. Annoying but not critical.
