New to OO
The find function in the OO help isn't working - i get an error message telling me that the OpenOffice.org configuration has been changed & that i need to select a jre
but when i go to tools/options/OpenOffice.org there's nothing there.
I initially wondered if this might be because i'd added some buttons to one of the toolbars (it didn't seem likely, but i knew i hadn't changed anything else), so I un/re-installed OO, but am still having the same problem.
I could do with some guidance on how to resolve this issue, please.
TIA

Hi and welcome to the forum!
Have you installed a 32bit version of Java? The 64bit version is not recognized by AOO.
There are plenty of topics about Java, don't hesitate to search the forum with the mere "java" keyword. Display the results as topics instead of posts in the advanced search.

I don't remember actively installing any version of java & the options dialogue box (2nd screenshot) indicates that there isn't any jre installed, or am i misunderstanding something here?
If I need to download/install one, what exactly should i be looking for & where should i get it?
my OS is 64x & the OO is 32x (x86)

Make sure that the latest version in the 1.6 series, 32 bits, is installed (or install it). That will be recognized. I'm not sure if OOo already accepts Java 7.

Make that Java 1.7 on Apache OO (but still the 32 bits one, as OO doesn't support 64 bits yet).

As far as I remember, under Windows, Control Panel should show some Java control panel which ought identify the version of Java installed. There are links on the forum and fixes for Java 7 installs, but the quick answer is to download and install Java 32 bit, version 1.6.3x. In Hagar's links you should find a pointer to the Java website for download. You are looking for something labeled i586, and over 15 MB in size. Once this is installed you need to select it (once) in OpenOffice.

OOo versions earlier than AOO 3.4.0 must have Java 6. If you have AOO 3.4.1, you can use Java 7, but it must be 32-bit. Use the 32-bit Internet Explorer to download Java from Java.com and you should get the 32-bit version of Java 7. Install it. In the AOO Java Options, make sure that it is selected and enabled. If you go to Help and get a "JRE defective" error when searching, download and install the
Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable Package (x86), then run Windows Update.
Edit: Java 7 can also be downloaded from FileHippo. You can choose between 32-bit and 64-bit versions:
