[Solved] Wrong dash appearing automatically

Post by jaycee6828 »

When I use a short dash (-) between words eg 01 - Fred, after I press return at the end of the line it gets replaced by a long dash. I can then delete it and replace with a short dash which stays short.

Is there a setting somewhere I have got wrong please?

Just watched again and in fact the dash changes as soon as I type a space in the line - sorry about that.

That's Autocorrect. You can change that behaviour in Tools - AutoCorrect Options, Replace tab. While you're there, take a look at the other tabs to get an idea of what you can configure there.

Thanks, I had thought it w\s that but when I just checked again there is nothing in there to replace a long dash with a short one, I even tried putting in an entry saying replace the long dash with the short one but it stilldisplays the same behaviour - as soon as I press a space say after 01 - fred then the short dash (displayed here) changes to a long one.

By the way I can't even find a key on muy keyboard that gives me the long dash - the closest is _ but the dash there is not in the same place as the short one -.

You got me wrong - the Autocorrect function replaces the short hyphen - with a long one or n dash, so you should disable that replacement in Autocorrect and restore the hyphen yourself. There is no default key binding for the n dash.

I see now, it wasn't in Autocorrect - Replace, it was in Autocorrect - Options.

It now works as I like it.

Many thanks and sorry about my misunderstanding.

I did that, and it worked for a while - but now it's doing it again. I want to kill this behaviour permanently. Is there a Registry hack or something?m running Windows 11 and LibreOffice 7.5.4.2

- ah, I found the Options checkboxes and unchecked them. Hopefully that's solved it.
