Hi,

I am using the official OOo 2.4.0 build on Ubuntu 8.04. Please note, I am NOT using the Ubuntu build, but rather the official build. The default UI font looks terrible. I would like to change it. I tried following the instructions at http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wik ... bstitution but it has no effect. Did the default UI font change? Or is there some other way to use a differnent UI font?

I believe I read somewhere that the default font was changed because on many other systems, the default was not looking very good.

Are you sure you chose the correct font to replace?
Have you tried opening Writer
Tools | Options | OpenOffice Writer | Basic Fonts?

Note: you also have to turn off the option: OO.org > View > Use system font for user interface

On my Fedora system, the Fedora-packaged OOo would not change the UI font for me at all. However, the OO.org build would let me change the UI font.

Hi again, thanks for your replies. I have spent hours trying to change the fonts, I have tried all combinations of font substitutions, per the instructions, and my own tricks. Nothing works. The official OOo build will only use a poorly-rendered version of my Gnome fonts. If I change my Gnome appearance, the OOo fonts also change, but they have subpixel rendering problems. The "Tools | Options | OpenOffice Writer | Basic Fonts" is for document fonts, not UI fonts. Acknack, I would be very interested to know how you changed your fonts on the official OOo build. The Ubuntu 8.04 build of OOo has beautiful fonts, but it has other bigger issues, which to me are worse than this font issue.

I only followed the instructions. With "Use system font for UI" OFF, as soon as I set up the font substitution for "Andale Sans UI" (which I see in the font list) to some other font, and click OK, OOo uses the new font.

The font substitution dialog is a little unusual and it's easy to make a mistake using it.

Very strange. I tried the exact same settings, except I used Times New Roman as the replacement. And actually I tried a million other combinations. It never changes. Here's my screenshot:

Could it be that your monitor can't clearly display the combination of three things: screen resolution, font style, and font size?

What happens when you change the font size? What about the screen resolution?

Well, it's just that all the rest of my system has beautiful fonts, with Gnome sub-pixel hinting for LCD screens. It's at 96 DPI. The Ubuntu build of OOo that I had before displayed fonts very nicely.
