I have installed 3.4.1 and set all defaults-57. But when I want to open .doc documents I keep getting the msg "this operation requires elevation". I have done several things to fix: ran as administrator and tried to change ownership under the Properties-Advanced tabs. Nothing works??? What can I do? Thx, ron

Hi and welcome to the forum!
Have you tried that one:

Are these files on an external hard drive? You should already own any files stored in your user account.

I have this same problem.
My computer has now also said after looking into 'programme compatablility' that the programme is incompatable.
I have mamaged to open a document from my hard drive but I think that next time I log on the same problem will occurr.
Can you offer any words of wisdom?
thanks.

The message is a Windows system error message and best help will be found on a Windows Forum; I have no Win Vista/Win 7 experience, but I have heard of this error being fixed by logging into Windows as Administrator, then right clicking on the application to be run and selecting "Run as Administrator" (note: two actions).

Firewall fix for "requires elevation" problem:
Having to elevate the program every time you want to open a file is annoying. I used to have the same problem. In my case it was caused by my firewall, which was Norton 360. To fix it I had to open my Norton 360, go to Firewall --> Settings --> Traffic Rules and then add Open Office to the traffic list. Select "allow" so that the program can open automatically.
If you have a different type of firewall you still might want to check the configuration of your firewall. Good luck,

Excuse me, I made an error on my earlier post. In my Norton settings I meant to direct to "Program Rules," not "Traffic Rules." If your program is blocked by your firewall that can be a problem.

Agh! I spoke too soon. I fixed settings in Norton to allow the program OpenOffice.Org but Windows 7 is still claiming this as in "incompatible program" as well as requiring elevation. I just wanted to open my files using "open with" feature and open the Word docs as Open Office documents. No can do without elevating, which is still an annoyance, especially as I planned on re-doing a lot of these files. The copy of MS Office that I have is apparently "non-commercial," so I am assuming that maybe that is why it quits in the middle of editing my novel.
If you are a poor, unpublished novelist, with no money to spend several hundred $$ on word processing programs, the MS is a bugger. Are they trying to force everyone to use their software? Seems that way to me sometimes.

I've never seen an "incompatible program" error message on Vista or Windows 8 and elevation is only required during installation (most programs on Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8, including OOo/AOO should require elevation for normal operations). You can use the Sysinternals Process Monitor to find out what OOo is trying to do that requires elevation.
