How do I get writer to recognize and use all the fonts in the Windows font folder? I am using Open Office 2.3 in Windows xp home edition. Thanks for the help. Rascallion

Do you mean that it doesn't?

Some of them might not be properly installed. I assume you're not using a font manager, which would make all fonts available in the program upon request, so here's a way to do it using the built-in Windows method.

Go to Control Panel> Fonts and in the File menu click "Add new fonts." The "Folders" path should default to C:\WINDOWS but if it doesn't, navigate there and select the Fonts folder. It may take a moment for the list of fonts to populate. Click the Select All button and click OK.

Now you'll need a little patience, because a message will pop up for each font that is already installed. Just hit Enter for "OK" to dismiss the message. You can do that part very rapidly, so it should take only a minute or two if you have a moderate number of fonts installed. If the installer finds fonts to install, you'll notice some action in the Install Fonts progress bar behind the messages.

The next step is to search your computer for files with .ttf or .fon file extensions, just to make sure you've found all the fonts that MS might have been using, and install them the same way.

I am also getting the same problem and I have installed them as mentioned. It just doesnt seem to show them at all in Open office 2.3 . Fonts that I previously installed before I switched to Open Office 2.3 are showing but none of the new ones I installed. Surely I dont have to re-install Open Office to get this working? Somebody please help as its doing my head in! Boooo!

OpenOffice 2.3 is not specific enough. Do you have 2.3.0 or 2.3.1? All the x.x.1 versions are bug fixes.

Re-installing is simple. First close all instances of OpenOffice, including the QuickStarter if you have that running in your system tray. Now go to Start> Control Panel> Add or remove programs, find OpenOffice, click the Change/Remove button and a couple of screens into the process, choose the "repair" option.

How many fonts to you have installed? There is such a thing as too many, and the problem is on the side of the operating system, rather than OpenOffice. If you have more than 600 or so, you will want to look into a font manager. One place to start might be SourceForge.net.
