[Solved] Why not PM5, PM6, and PMD extensions

Post by sonshinesociety »

I have been using PageMaker for years on my XP machine, but now PageMaker will no longer work, for what ever reason I do not know and I cannot delete PageMaker from XP. I downloaded OpenOffice 3.1 thinking it would be a solution, but I cannot open any PageMaker files. Why are these not available in OpenOffice? If they are, where do I find them?

OOo already opens several file type extensions and saves to them as well, but it is designed with it's own in mind. There are thousands of file type extensions out there and trying to code the program to read and save to each of them would take way too long to code. It already handles outside programs file types better than most anything else. If you need to open something in a file extension that OOo does not read you can always try a converter program to convert it to .odf for you like http://www.zamzar.com/. I am not sure if they accept pagemaker files, but if they don't check out some of the other file converters out there.

PageMaker was discontinued in 2004. Not even the latest version of its successor, InDesign, can open PageMaker files (a shame for sure). You can try converting PageMaker files to the Word format, try Google for that, and then you can open the doc file in OOo. Be sure to lose lots of formatting.

It may be worth setting the clock on your computer back some years. It is possible that the installed PageMaker is set by the coders to die after a number of years.
