[Solved] Downloading updates

Post by aredev »

Which version of OpenOffice.org are you using? 2.3
What Operating System (version) are you using? Win XP
What is your question or comment? Today I downloaded new ver of OOo (2.4). My query or comment is that when I am downloading a newer version which is an upgrade of an older version, why I need to download complete package (127 MB) once again? Why is it not possible to down load the patch with changes/upgrades & install it? This will save money, time & effort (in reinstalling a new package)

Thanks & regards,

Rahul Dev

You have to download the whole thing. Why? There are no other options right now. Once I saw the definition of economics as something like, "Unlimited desires. Limited resources." Developers are working on patching upgrades, but there are limited resources to fulfill every hearts' desires.

If you want more details, search the mailing lists and/or issue tracker at openoffice.org (not so much the forum). A developer gave a nice answer.

Basically, I think it is due to the fact that new versions of OpenOffice include new features. This results in the need that a complete install is required, because the software architecture has changed. So it is not a simple update.

I think it is comparable to other software, e.g. Winamp needs a full install for each new version, and they come out quite frequently also.
In the end it might even be comparable to upgrading from e.g. Microsoft Office 2000 to Office 2003. Also here you cannot simply do an update.

Thanks to everybody. The matter stands resolved as Phil has explained. One last thing but not the least. We should maintain decency in public forums like this & respect individuality of everyone. I hope Villeroy will abstain from using remarks like

in future in any forum & in any of his/her psost.

However, this topic is closed for all practical reasons.

Thanks once again & regards to everybody,
