[Solved] Linking numbered paragraphs to numbered headings

Post by steingod »

Hi,

I am running OOo 3.2 on Ubuntu 10.04 but believe the question is of more generic character. I would like to link numbered paragraphs to numbered headings in order to create a system requirements document where I add a number of requirements under each heading. Typically the headings used in various parts of the document vary (thus using headings is not an option) and I would like every requirement to start the numbering with R, i.e R2.1.1, R2.1.2, R2.1.3, ... in section 2.1.

Is this possible? I have tried to search both the forum and internet without success. Any hints are greatly appreciated.

All the best
Øystein

Hi and welcome to the forum!

The first possibility is to put 'R' then the Chapter number field and then a Number range field. For the latter, see for example: [Solved] Automatically number each row, you'll have to manually reset the value to 1 for each new section (or change the variable name, more robust IMHO).

Please add '[Solved]' at the beginning of your first post title (edit button) if your issue has been fixed.

Thanks for a very quick reply.

Please ignore my lacking knowledge in the field, is it possible to include this in paragraph numbering (using Autotext as fallback)?

Another possibility might be to use a database to generate/store the numbers, then insert them into the text document by a field. The database can be a simple spreadsheet. That would allow you to have complete control over the form and sequence of the numbering.

It would be a nasty chore to keep the numbering in sync with the document, however--if you ever add a heading, you have to manually add a new number for it in the data source.

Oh, and it wouldn't work with cross-references, either.

Hmm, maybe not such a good idea...
