Have I hit a hotkey or switched something off by accident?

P.S. running in windows Xp home and never had this problem (and don't have the problem in other programs).

Selecting text
Hi all, I copy and pasted a document from google documents to edit in Writer v2.2 but was unable to select text by left clicking and dragging the mouse. I closed down the program and just tried writing in a new document, but the same problem. I upgraded to v2.3 thinking perhaps it was a bug that needed to be worked out but the same problem. I searched the documentation, and on here, but I've been unable to locate the answer to this.
Have I hit a hotkey or switched something off by accident?

A user on The OpenOffice.org Forum with the same problem reported that the problem was fixed by using a different mouse.
