No. It is a fork of OpenOffice.org
OOo is now part of Apache. New releases (starting in about three months) will be as Apache OpenOffice.

I like OOo better. OOo 3.3 does everything I need and has never crashed. I haven't tried the latest version of LO, but every previous version I tried crashed within 24 hours of installation. I won't trade stability for "newer".

i herd the Openoffice mac team quit & made LibreOffice.

Splitting hairs, it’s a fork of a fork. LibO is based on Go-OO, the latter being forked from OOo some time ago.

You can try LO 3.3.4. I find it as rock solid as Ooo 3.3.0. However, LO 3.4.4 is really bad. It crashes all the time.
