Choice 1
Save in the Microsoft Office formats (.doc, .xls, .ppt) instead of OpenDocument. To do that, open the document in OpenOffice.org, then click File, then click Save As, then change the Type.

Choice 2
Give the other person OpenOffice.org or Open XML/ODF Translator (a plugin).

You can't get away from document conversion. If you use Microsoft Office 2007, you have the same problem: 90% of the world can't open its default file format.

Here are some easy alternatives
1. Email as a PDF. Just click File menu. Then click Send as Attachment. Then choose PDF. Anyone can open it, but they can't edit it.
2. Email as a Microsoft Office format. Similar to above thing, but in the third step choose Microsoft. Anyone can open it, but there is a small chance in losing some formatting.
3. Set your default save format to Microsoft Office. Again, anyone can open it.
