I have made this rather complicated document with many objects and tabs. (It's a boardgame gameboard btw)
Now I have this rectangle that should be in certain tab, but apparently managed to flee to another tab and I don't know which one.
Whenever something like this happens, I have to click on every tab, unlock it, click my object to see if it responds, lock the tab, click on the next tab etc. It is time-consuming.
Is there any way to have a more general overview of which objects that are in which tabs?
In what tab is my object?
Re: In what tab is my object?
I don't know of any way to find out. However, it's not necessary if all you want to do is move it to a specific tab.
You can select the object no matter which layer (tab) is active, so just select the object, cut to the clipboard, click to select the layer you want it on, and paste.
You can also move an object to a specific layer by drag and drop, although it's a little more difficult at first. Select the object, then click-drag down to the layer tabs, to the specific layer you want to move it to. The target layer tab will be highlighted. Don't worry about the position of the object, just release the mouse button (i.e. drop the object) onto the layer tab where you want it. Draw will not change the object's position at all, it will simply move the object to the new layer.

Re: In what tab is my object?
To quickly check if the object is on a specific layer, you can shift-click on the layer tab to hide the entire layer. If the object disappears from view, you found your layer. (This toggle works on locked layers too, and is a bit quicker than unlocking.)
The layer property of an object could be shown in the Navigator, but that represents a challenge to the developers when it comes to grouped objects. (Group members can be on different layers.) Maybe an enhancement request is in order (if it's not already there).

Grouping doesn't make them into a single object though, it just puts them into a container of sorts... so I'd think the layer property for each component of a group would be intact and easy to discern... as well as the layer property of a group. I would think that whatever layer was active when the group was created would 'host' the group, so that could show up in layer properties too.keme wrote:The layer property of an object could be shown in the Navigator, but that represents a challenge to the developers when it comes to grouped objects. You're right of course. My comment was rather "off the cuff".foxcole wrote:Grouping doesn't make them into a single object though, it just puts them into a container of sorts... so I'd think the layer property for each component of a group would be intact and easy to discern... as well as the layer property of a group. Still, making this an intuitive part of the user interface is not entirely trivial.
Some factors making it nontrivial:
- group being "hosted" on different layer from that of any group member, the group host layer may be deleted
- the group doesn't have a graphical representation apart from that of its members
I'm sure there are more...
I didn't enter (or search for) a feature request, and even if entered, I wouldn't expect it implemented anytime soon.
