How do I save as .txt?

Post by snovotny »

I have a file that downloads to my computer as an .xls, but has to be uploaded as .txt (don't ask me, seems goofy.) Is there a way to save as .txt? I don't see it from the save as menu?

Thanks!

Save as CSV and change the name extension.

How do I change the name extension? I thought it is normally done from the properties menu of the file, but didn't see it there?

Hm, just right-click on the file and choose Rename.

Ummm, that doesn't actually change the file type that it is. It will not actually convert that file into another file type. I am not trying to NAME something a .txt, I need it to BE a .txt. If I right click it and rename, then it will just be Somefile.txt.csv, which won't work since it will still be a .csv file.

A csv file is nothing but plain text. Suffix ".csv" indicates that the plain text contained in the file represents a tabular structure rather than human language, so a dumb operating system like Windows gets a hint that this plain text should be pushed into some program other than Notepad.exe although it would be perfectly readable in Notepad.

If you use Windows (you should have actually specified your OS), disable hiding file name extensions for registered types.
