I controled somes parameters :
options > paramètre linguistiques > linguistiques > modules de langues installés :
- openoffice.org Hunspell spellchecker
- HALTlinuxLibhnj Hyphenator
- openoffice.org New Thesaurus
In the page of the 3 options [editer] i have : openoffice.org Hunspell spellchecker : coupure des mots and dictionnaire des synonymes.
But i can't use it.
Some on can help me ?

Have you tried to run the wizard to install the dictionaries again ? (Fichiers>Assistants>Installer de nouveaux dictionnaires).
Note that there is also a French forum here :
http://www.forum-openoffice.org/forum/index.php
NB: are you sure the language for your paragraph style is set to French (
Fonts tab of the style properties).
Thanks to add '[Solved]' in your
first post title (
edit button) if your issue has been fixed.

You can download the
wizard from the wiki page, see in that thread (French) :
[Tuto] Correcteur d'orthographe.
Please use English here.

I also can't use my thesaurus on Writer. I have OO.o v2.3 on WinXP. My hyphenation link is active but my thesaurus link is not (it is pale grey). I tried what you advised for the person who asked about synonyms. I went to DicOO.o and reinstalled the dictionaries. Then I closed Writer and reopened it but the thesaurus link is still pale grey.

If you had the Quickstarter (in system tray) activated, had you closed it also ?
NB: according to the posts of the initial OP on the French forum, the problem was that the macros were not enabled, so he could not install the dictionaries from the wizard.

I closed the quickstarter and reinstalled and it's working perfectly. Thanks for your help and thanks for hosting this forum.

I too am having the same problem. I've checked the options and language settings and all seems fine. I reloaded the dictionaries and made sure the the quickstarter was disabled. Still the Thesaurus is in pale gray. I've even deleted OO and re-installed a fresh copy but still nothing. Not sure if I understand how to install new dict. I am not computer savy! Help! This is causing all kinds of problems for me!

As Hagar noted in his first reply in this thread, there is a wizard to help install dictionaries (File>Wizards> Install New Dictionaries) but I'm not sure whether that will help in your case. Sounds like you already have the dictionaries installed...
But just to make sure, go to Tools> Options> Language Settings, and in the Default languages for documents, what is selected? The languages that are actually installed have blue checkmarks next to them. Does yours?
If that part looks okay, then you'll want to check the language setting on the paragraph style(s) you're using, because these will override the default language. Edit the paragraph style and see what's in the language setting on the Font tab.
If that still looks good (blue checkmark and all) then you'll want to look at the character style. Its language setting overrides the paragraph and the default settings.
If none of the above lead to a solution, please let us know what you found and we'll try something else.

Yes I did all of those things and the doc I want still doesn't enable the Thesaurus. Madly an older doc with exactly the same settings does work! Maybe something about going to the 3.2.1 upgrade?
Yes eng (usa) is selected under tools-options-lang
under both paragraph font styles and character font Eng(usa) is selected
still the Tools-lang-Thesaurus is un-highlighted although the hyphen is.

It might be selected, but that doesn't help if there's no blue checkmark next to it. The blue checkmark indicates the dictionary is actually installed.

• In Tools> Options> Language Settings> Writing Aids, in the top box (Available language modules) is "OpenOffice.org New Thesaurus" selected?
• In C:\Program Files\OpenOffice.org 2.3\share\dict\ooo (or wherever your 2.3 install is) do you have a file labeled "th_en_US_v2.dat" and one labeled "th_en_US_v2.idx"? Those are the thesaurus files for US English. As you might tell by the location inside the 2.3 install folder, these are specific to the installation... not kept across installations like your user preferences are. So, if these files exist in the earlier version, the thesaurus will work properly, but if you accidentally deleted them when cleaning out unneeded dictionaries in your new installation, the thesaurus of course won't work.
Just in case you don't have those two files, I've uploaded them in an archive file:
http://www.mediafire.com/?ftzzrvjy2gd
Just unzip it into that dict\ooo folder, then make sure the Writing Aids option is selected, and you should be good to go.
Does that fix it?

I'm rather puzzled by the fact that it does work for an older document. With the documents that don't seem to work, does the spell checking work ? Perhaps there is a direct formatting remaining. If you select the text and clear the formatting (CTRL+SHIFT+SPACE), does it work afterwards ?

I wondered if that was a remembered test from an earlier version, before the upgrade files were uploaded... or possibly the older file actually loaded up in a previous version still resident on the computer. Because language files are specific to the installation (not preserved for all installations, like users preferences are) that might have explained the difference. But I may have jumped to conclusions here. Yours is a more reasonable suggestion.
