Welcome beginner. Please answer all of the questions below which may provide information necessary to answer your question.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Which version of OpenOffice.org are you using? 2.3
What Operating System (version) are you using? OX X
What is your question or comment?

I use "Open" to try to open a word file. I am taken to a choice of folders, and select "Documents." I am presented with my list of subfolders or subdirectories within Documents. I try to open a subfolder by double clicking. command clicking, option clicking, and control clicking. The folder will not open.
I search for "open folder" "open subfolder" "open directory" and "open subdirectory" in documentation, forums, help, wikis, etc.
Nothing relevant appears.
This seems too simple an issue to be stopping me from using openoffice, but here it is.
Thanks for any help.
Robert

Well, thank goodness for that. It seems like an operating system issue, not an OpenOffice issue [Sorry, but I've never heard of OX X.] Can you open the same folder using a file manager?

David.

I guess you meant OS X so I move the thread in the Mac forum.

Try to use the OOo dialogs for open/save: Tools>Options>OOo>General.

Thanks to add '[Solved]' in your first post title (edit button) if your issue has been fixed.

My apologies to one and all. I really didn't have on my thinking cap that day, and thought it was a different platform I hadn't heard of. Seldom coming across it in my travels, OS X didn't cross my mind.

David.

Does this affect all subfolders, or only some? Open Office is pickier about path names (i.e. folder and file names) than OSX is, so make sure to try a folder with a name that includes only letters and numbers.

Are you using the X11 version of OpenOffice.org, or the Aqua version (which is still in alpha or beta)?

Which version of OS X? (e.g. Tiger or Leopard), PPC or Intel processor?

If you can't get OpenOffice.org to work, NeoOffice is another option. Neo is an independent Mac port/fork of OpenOffice.org. It doesn't require X11, uses the native file picker, allows you to access Mac's Addressbook as a data source, and now includes (some) scanner support and support for most Quicktime compatible video files. On the other hand, it is always a version or more behind OpenOffice.org. NeoOffice is currently at 2.2.3, which is based on Open Offices 2.2.1 (or maybe 2.2.2), while OpenOffice has been at 2.3.1 and has just (or will soon) moved to 2.4.

That said, I've not seen this problem reported before, so my guess is there's a fairly easy fix.

Hi,

What is the name of your folder ? Its a fact that Mac OSX is more liberal with file and folder naming conventions than Unix/Linux, from which the Mac version takes its basis. This means that there are certain folders and even files that can't be seen normally by the OOo file dialogs (open/save, navigation etc, what we call the "filepicker"). It is for example, not recommended to use slashes in file or folder names under Unix/Linux, although these are permitted and managed on the Mac. The same goes for other characters like semi-colons, question marks, and other forms of punctuation. Spaces in folder names can also be a problem, and it is worthwhile adhering to conventions by using underscores to represent spaces.

HTH,
Alex
