Specifically Writer Download

Post by iAaron »

Welcome beginner. Please answer all of the questions below which may provide information necessary to answer your question.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Which version of OpenOffice.org are you using? N/A
What Operating System (version) are you using? Windows XP Home Edition Home
What is your question or comment? I would like to know where I may download OpenOffice.org 2 Writer, instead of the entire OpenOffice.org 2 Suite. I am worried, because I have High-Speed Satellite Internet, and I have a Bandwidth usage limit, in short terms, I can only download a certain amount a month or the ISP(WildBlue), will shut down my Service. I would just like to download OpenOffice.org 2 Writer separately, instead of the entire Suite.

Thank You, Nice Forum,
Aaron

There are no separate download packages for Writer only. Even if there were, it wouldn't save much on download size, as the OOo application suite is designed so that most of the code and resources are shared between all the applications.

Your ISP should give you some way to tell how close to the limit you are--the OOo download is about 150Mb (exact sizes should be on the download page).

You can also order OOo on a CD for a small fee. There is a list of distributors on the OOo website.

In any case, you should wait a few days for OOo 2.4 to be released--it's a significant upgrade.

A number of PC Magazines have the OpenOffice installer for version on their cover CD/DVD. The March edition of Personal Computer World (UK) does, for example.

Why don't you then use some other word processor, like Abiword, rather than an entire suite? OpenOffice is fine software, but there is no need to use it just because it is there. A web search would find other dedicated word processing software. If you want a little more, there are also desktop publishing programs like Ragtime Solo, but the free version may no longer be available.

Portable Open Office FAQ

Can You Pick Which Apps Are Installed?
Unlike, say, Microsoft Office, which is actually multiple programs that are loosely interconnected, OpenOffice.org is actually one big application with multiple functions. So, even if you were to only install Writer and Calc, it would only save you a grand total of about 9MB. And it would be one more full distribution to maintain... the largest one, that takes an hour to upload every release.
