Hello,
I am looking for a way to open a .docx file- Microsoft's new extension to replace .doc files. Older versions of Word and other applications like OO can't open this type of file. I know there is a way!
Thanks-

Did you try a search for "docx" before posting?

Sadly Microsoft is not even remotely interested in interoperability and worldwide standards. docx is a perfect example of this.
If you can, ask people to send you the documents in a commonly supported format such as the old standard .doc format. If they cannot, or refuse to there are a couple of things you can do.
If you have a Mac, and are using the NeoOffice version of OpenOffice.org. there is a OOXML support extension available. It's mentioned on the NeoOfifce website.
You can use
http://docx-converter.com/ and convert the docs to a common format that OOo can open.
Novel has released an OOXML extension for OpenOffice.org
http://download.novell.com/SummaryFree. ... SrjfdE4U58~
with one version for Windows and one for Linux. I've used the Linux one and it works fine. Please note the limitations of the extension... it only works on the Novel edition of OOo. It probably will not work yet on the main OOo build .
The official OpenOffice.org version 3.0 is planned to have support for OOXML built in.

If you are interested in the most current state of writerfilter see here:
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/WriterFilter
Additionally, I have posted some blog entries on GullFOSS:

You are welcome to join us and help implementing the new filter. If so, please drop me a mail.

This link is dead, but a new version
OdfConverter 1.1.7 is available.
Please note the limitations of the extension... it only works on the Novel edition of OOo. It probably will not work yet on the main OOo build .
It integrates with Novell/SUSE and Ubuntu. However, you can use OdfConverter without any kind of OpenOffice.org (or with any kind of OpenOffice.org edition) in both
Linux and
Windows as a command line tool.
The official OpenOffice.org version 3.0 is planned to have support for OOXML built in.
Using a completely different mechanism called xmlfilter. Before OOo 3.0.0 comes out, you can try xmlfilter in
OxygenOffice where it is well integrated and easy to use.
