[Solved] Java reinstalled

Hi there,

My apologies if this has already been discussed. I have just decided to trial OO and installed v2.3.1 on my Windows Vista machine. However during installation, Java 6 Update 3 was installed on my machine, despite the fact that only a week ago I installed Java 6 Update 5. Why? To be honest with you, this is the sort of tomfoolery I have come to expect from Microsoft, and I don't really want to face this again. Is there any specific reason that the OO installation wasn't able to check for the version of Java installed on my machine, see that it was more up to date than its version and thus be happy with that without also installing an older version?

Pete

You can download OOo with or without JRE, it is shown in download file name.

If you downloaded with JRE, you can unselect JRE installation, selecting custom installation.

JREs don't replace each other. You can have several versions on the same machine... which is good because applications don't necessarily support the new versions as they come out. Because you didn't already have a copy of JRE 1.6. 0_03, it went ahead and installed it. There's really no harm in leaving it installed, and actually might be some good in doing so, in case an application can't run the newer version.

I have just downloaded and installed 2.4.0. But the download page took me by default to the version with Java, there is NO option to select the non-Java version unless you click on 'more platforms and languages' and even there the option is not very clear. Since many of us already have Java, and for that matter up to date versions as we keep track of them for security reasons, why is the option to download non-Java not made far more clear on the home page and download entry page? Even better, make the default the non-Java one and ask if you want Java. An extra 20Mb download on an already large download is very significant.
