Connection tutorials?

Are there any tutorials available that will help a newbie to navigate connecting to a MySQL database from OO on the Mac? I have XAMPP installed and have several test databases working, but can't figure out how to connect using either JDBC or ODBC from OO. The help menu helpfully suggests contacting my system administrator, who is, of course, me
