Welcome beginner. Please answer all of the questions below which may provide information necessary to answer your question.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Which version of OpenOffice.org are you using? 2.3
What Operating System (version) are you using? XP Home SP2
What is your question or comment?

I see that OpenOffice vers 2.3.1 is available. Do I need to upgrade? Is there a quick way?

You need to download the whole suite again and install it no need to uninstall the previous version, it will be done automatically).

Note that 2.4 should be released in few days or a couple of weeks.

Thanks to add '[Solved]' in your first post title (edit button) if your issue has been fixed.
