I have recently tried to use freespire to avoid buying the latest m$ product. I am defantely a noob regarding Linux so I choose a build with items built into it. I am a teacher and I use my computer for presentations. I recently tried to open several powerpoints in open office 2.2 and the files first open in a ascII converter asking for replacement fonts. Then it opens the power point slide in writer. I know that openoffice 2.3 for windows works perfect with these files. Any suggestions?

Thanks all

The ASCII filter dialog is typically a sign that OOo does not recognize the file format. OOo--even back as far as 2.2--has opened every Powerpoint file I've come across, so it's something of a mystery why it should balk at your files.

What version of MS Office was used to create the Powerpoint files?

In any case, you definitely want the most recent OOo version you can get. Improvements are constantly being made, especially in relation to MS Office compatibility. The current stable release is 2.3.1, and 2.4 is due out in a week or so.
