odt file that causes OO2 and SO8 to produce bad .doc file

Post by ykar »

Followup to thread from the other Forum (see end message asking me to attach files here),
there should be 4 attached files: a .odt and then 3 .doc files, one from SO8, one from OO2, and one from AbiWord (see below for details). Both the SO8 and OO2 .doc produced files cause MS Win Word XP Service Pack 3 updated to fail, but the AbiWord .doc produced file worked with MS Win Word XP. What is wrong? Note that both the SO8 and OO2 .doc files are much longer than the AbiWord .doc file. OOPS -- Cannot add another attachment, 3 is the maximum -- so how I do post the third .doc file?

Following up to the thread below, I have done some further tests of Linux (CentOS5) running VMware running MS Win XP running MS Word XP Pro. I have now installed MS Office XP Service Pack 3 -- the most recent "full" pack I can find at the MS Office download site.

I have MS Word 2003 on a different MS Win XP under VMware (under VMware, the hard drives in which MS Win lives can in fact be nothing more than Linux files -- thus multiple versions are possible providing sufficient Linux disk space is available).

MS Word 2003 has no problem with a plain text .doc file converted from a StarOffice 8 .odt file via Linux StarOffice 8, LInux OpenOffice 2, or Linux AbiWord 2.4.6 . In both SO and OO, I chose the XP version of a MS Word .doc file; AbiWord has no optional forms of .doc .

MS Word XP SP 3 (as with the original CDROM version I installed) fails on both the StarOffice and OpenOffice .doc files, but works with the AbiWord version.

If there is a location to which I can email and/or upload the original .odt file (and the three .doc conversions if appropriate), perhaps someone can find out why this does not work? I understand that many persons have experienced no problems between creating a MS Word .doc file in Linux SO or OO and reading it in MS Win MS Word; thus, this file may be of interest. No special graphics, no imports from a presentation manager, etc. -- just plain text with a supported SO/OO font.

Any help would be appreciated.

A small update. I just created a plain text poster (no graphics) in SO8, saved as both .odt and .doc for Word XP. I then opened the .doc in MS Word XP under MS Win XP under VMware under Linux. No problem. There must be something strange about the other file although MS Word 2003 had no problems with that file. Any suggestions? Is there any way to "diagnose" the problem through debugging the .doc file that causes MS Word XP (but not MS Word 2003) to fail?

I opened both Word files in Word 2002 (regular Win XP system) with the latest updates - and no problem.

edit: Btw I only saw three files instead of the four that you promised.
LibreOffice 25.8.4.2 on Ubuntu Linux
