I'm running impress 2.3 on Ubuntu Linux, and have not been able to get Impress to show visible guide lines. Is this feature actually available or has it never worked on the Linux version? Perhaps I need to change something with X ? Any advice most welcome.
Thanks
Jim

Re: Can not get Impress to show guide lines?
It has always worked fine for me.
Can you tell us exactly what you're doing to get the guides?
Do you have View > Guides > Display gudes = ON (checked)?
If you right-click to insert a guide, they appear at the left/top side or corner of the slide, where they can be hard to notice.
If you View > Ruler, then you can insert a guide by clicking on either ruler and dragging onto the slide area.
If none of that helps, then try the packages from OO.org.

Re: Can not get Impress to show guide lines?
Thanks acknack, after searching many many times for help ... and documentation I finally found a web page that told me that turning on the guides in the menu was not enough ... like in Powerpoint, that you actually had to right click and create a new line! Should this be published in a manual somewhere ... more likely I'm just dull!
If someone finds this by searching, right click in blank area, and then create snap line/point ... make some selections and the line will magically appear ...!!
Thanks for help, got it now.

Re: Can not get Impress to show guide lines?
So, if you start with a completely empty slide, check that View > Guides > Display guides = YES, then insert a guide line--either from the context menu or from the ruler, then no guide appears until you select something?
I don't see that--the guides are visible on a completely empty slide.
I'm not saying you did anything wrong, I just want to understand the problem. Does the web page explain the problem? Maybe posting the link would help.

Re: Can not get Impress to show guide lines?
I think it does work correctly, just that in Powerpoint if you tell it to turn on the guides, a vertical and horizontal one appear immediately without having to use the context menu on the blank area .... and I didn't figure this out ... too many years of bad habits.
I'll try and find the link again ...
Found it, am I off track again? I'm thinking guides are synonymous with snap lines but perhaps they are different things? Anyway this is the site that set me straight.
Thanks

Ok, I think I've got it now; the linked page describes very clearly what I also see. It seems that the difference in behavior compared to Powerpoint is the source of confusion.
