when I open Office Org, it seems to take a long time to load (15-20sec.) Is this normal?

Please see here : Basic information needed
It may be normal depending on your hardware.
If it's for first load, what's about the following ones ?
Have you tried the Quickstarter ?

I'm having this same problem and even after registering I can't see the contents of the 'Basic Information needed' link. Sheesh! What's the big secret for getting a decent startup time in OOo? :?

The progress bar in the splash window gets to about 20% and stays there for 20-30 secs with no obvious system activity (top reports system idle & ethereal reports no network traffic). Happens for all document types tried so far (doc, ppt, xls).

Things seem to run just fine after that.

OOo 2.3.1
KDE 3.1.3
Linux 2.4.22

I gave the link to explain why we need some information to start investigating. The OS and OOo version are very important.

What Linux distribution (have you really read the survival guide ???) ?
You can try to delete your OOo user profile (~/.openoffice.org2).
